In 2006, winemaker Dermot Sugrue planted a small site at the foot of the South Downs in West Sussex, and named it Storrington Priory Vineyard. Seven years later, ‘The Trouble with Dreams’ from the 2009 vintage was released, rapidly gaining critical acclaim. The staggering quality of the next two vintages earned Sugrue South Downs a cult-like following, which grows to this day.

Like Deus Ex Machina – an act of divine intervention in Greek tragedy that resolves the seemingly impossible on stage – Rosé Ex Machina was the result of our own much needed bolt from the blue in 2016: an initially difficult vintage saved by a glut of grapes from Jenkyn Place vineyard that were, quite literally, perfect.

Fortune struck again in 2018 – a year that wasn't just full of sunshine, but was relentlessly warm and bright from start to finish, without a puff of wind, and virtually no rain. That remarkable summer is evident at its core.

With four and a half years on lees, and another twelve months in bottle, the 2018 Rosé Ex Machina is serene and expansive. Blood orange one minute and wild raspberries the next; juicy and creamy, but with razor-sharp focus – it's tasting better than ever.

Tasting Notes

"Vibrant, rich coral pink colour. On the nose wine is effortlessly ripe, fresh with orange peel, rose petals and strawberry ice-cream aromas. First sip strikes with juicy peach flavours that are in perfect balance with red-fruit creaminess. Pleasing touch of herbaceous notes gives complexity and dimensionality to yeast-infused berry flavours. Aftertaste is long, persistent and moreish. Perfect condition to drink now, but will improve with age and time on cork. Both a serious and gastronomic wine that will pair brilliantly with a whole range of dishes, this is equally a crowd-pleaser that gives much pleasure on its own."

Press Review

"Linear and taut with great precision showing subtle leafy hints with cherry and cranberry hints as well as keen acidity and fine spicy hints. So linear and fine with lovely purity" 94 Points, Jamie Goode WineAnorak.com,

"Divine! Literally magical." Helen McGinn (Saturday Kitchen)

Press Review 2

"Boasts generous ripe summer berries, red cherry and frangipane with toasty complexity to reflect the generous vintage. Mellow and welcoming on the palate, featuring red apple and white pepper-spiced strawberry & cream. Well-balanced with decent acidity. Red apple peel bitterness leads to a long, refreshing finish." 94 Points, Sylvia Wu, Decanter
