The roots of Dow’s standing as a great Port house reach back over 200 years. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Dow’s Vintage Ports have been landmark wines in virtually every great year, consistently setting the standard amongst all Port houses. Vintage Ports such as the remarkable Dow 1896, the 1927, 1945 1955, 1963, 1985, 1994 are all legends in the history of this great wine. These Ports are still magnificent today, even when 50 or 100 years old. Few wines can claim this quality and pedigree.

Tasting Notes

The palate is in the classic drier Dow’s style. Its tannins have softened but still give structure. Dark fruit and dates are lifted by liquorice, black pepper and a touch of ginger spice, with walnut and dark chocolate on the long, savoury finish. It is at or near its peak now and will keep for years. Decant it about two hours before serving to let it open and to leave the sediment behind.

Critics rate it highly. Neal Martin (Vinous, 93 points) suggested it may be the pick of the 1985 declarations, possibly having overtaken Taylor’s 1985, and Jancis Robinson gave it 18.5/20, calling it a wine built to last.
