Domaine du Colombier is widely recognised as one of the best sources of high quality Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage wine. The Viale family planted their first vines at the foot of the Hermitage hill in 1929; now the representative of the third generation, the tall and charming Florent, owns over 13 hectares of vines liberally scattered on some of the best sites over the communes of Mercurol and Tain, including 1.5 hectares of vineyards in the renowned Beaumes vineyard on the famous Hermitage hill. Before 1992 the entire production was sold to local negociants (Guigal in particular) and so only recently have the Viales been estate bottling and marketing their own wines.

Tasting Notes

Robust and earthen, this full-bodied Syrah is a classic expression of the muscularity and density of Hermitage. The palate is packed with flavours of stewed prunes and blueberry conserves but also layers of smoky tea leaf, salted liqorice and ore. It's ripe but strident in acidity, finishing on satiny, well-integrated tannins. The wine still needs some time to open.

Press Review

"100% Syrah. Aged for 18 months in oak (70% new). Cask sample. Tasted blind. Sweet red fruits, beetroot, rhubarb, blackcurrant. Very intense on the palate, with sharp acidity and drying tannins. There's lots of primary charm to the fruit, but the structure demands age."

Press Review 2

"The 2018 Hermitage comes from tiny parcels in les Beaumes, Péléat and les Dionnières and incorporates 60% to 70% whole bunches. It's a big, powerful wine that shows notes of roasted plums and ripe cherries, yet the plentiful tannins are silky, lending an elegant touch to the lingering finish. Drink 2022 - 2035."
