Sociando-Mallet is a famous "outsider" — an unclassed Haut-Médoc estate (never entered into the 1855 Classification or the Cru Bourgeois system by choice of longtime owner Jean Gautreau) that is widely regarded as producing wine of classified-growth quality. 57-hectare vineyard atop the Baleyron hill in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, just north of Saint-Estèphe, on gravel/clay over clay-limestone subsoil. Average vine age 35 years. Hand-harvested, sorted, traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled cement and stainless steel vats with pump-overs and rack-and-return; 25-day vatting; malolactic in vats; aged 12 months in barrels, 90% new oak.

Tasting Notes

Inky black color with a beautiful graphite and black-fruit nose. "Undoubtedly a great Sociando this year," with precise yet juicy graphite and black fruit on the palate from a fairly even Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend with a touch of Cabernet Franc.

Wine Advocate (94 pts): Refulgent purple/black color. Very intense and rich, "ambitious" bouquet with layers of small black cherries, blueberry, and a touch of sloes — less tertiary than previous vintages and more opulent. Medium-bodied palate with juicy, ripe tannin that almost disguises the firm structure underneath. Praised for completeness, neatly embroidered new oak, and freshness on the finish — called "totally convincing" and one of the best wines produced at the estate, an outstanding effort from Jean Gautreau.

ames Suckling (94 pts): Dark-berry and currant aromas with hints of spice. Medium body, firm and chewy tannins, fresh and clean finish. Shows focus and seriousness for the appellation, as usual from this producer. Better after 2022.
