The Burlotto winery has a storied history dating back to the mid-19th century when Giovanni Battista Burlotto, a visionary winemaker, founded the estate in Verduno, Piedmont. During his era, Barolo was primarily sold in bulk, but Burlotto revolutionized the wine industry in the region by being among the first to bottle his own wines, allowing greater control over quality and branding.

Giovanni Battista was a pioneer in cultivating and promoting Verduno’s unique terroir, particularly the Pelaverga varietal, which the estate still champions today. Following his death in 1927, the winery went through a quieter phase until Fabio Alessandria, a descendant, revitalized its global standing. Under Fabio’s leadership, the winery re-established itself as a leading producer, particularly noted for the Barolo Monvigliero, made using traditional methods like whole-cluster fermentation. The winery today is celebrated for producing elegant wines that harmonize tradition with a clear expression of Verduno’s unique soils and microclimates.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Barolo Acclivi from Comm. G.B. Burlotto is a standout blend sourced from multiple prized vineyards in Verduno, including Monvigliero and Neirane. It embodies the traditional elegance of Barolo, combining Nebbiolo's hallmark aromatic complexity with remarkable finesse.

Aromas of wild berries, roses, and hints of spice, supported by subtle earthy undertones. On the palate, it is refined and structured, featuring flavours of red cherry, cranberry, and licorice, balanced by bright acidity and fine-grained tannins. The texture is polished, and the finish is long and precise, underscoring its aging potential. Best enjoyed after decanting, it promises even greater complexity as it matures from 2026 onward.

"The Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2019 Barolo Acclivi is a selection of fruit from old vines in the best positions in Verduno. Specifically, it is a blend of fruit from Monvigliero, Neirane and Rocche dell’Olmo. The bouquet opens to elegant floral intensity with wild rose, violet, orange peel and delicate berry. This wine feels very alive thanks to the lifted and delicate nature of its aromas. The finish is silky, with melting tannins and terrific length. Wines from Verduno tend to show a combination of floral intensity and spiciness, but this vintage of Acclivi is partial to the floral side of the equation."

Press Review 2

"Another stunner from this iconic producer, Burlotto’s 2019 Acclivi opens with heady aromas of crushed mint, iris, perfumed berry and Asian spice. Smooth and delicious, the elegant and energized palate delivers juicy cranberry, cherry compote, star anise and blood orange before a tangy mineral finish recalling saline. Firm but refined tannins and vibrant acidity provide structure and balance. "Drink 2027–2044.
