The Burlotto winery has a storied history dating back to the mid-19th century when Giovanni Battista Burlotto, a visionary winemaker, founded the estate in Verduno, Piedmont. During his era, Barolo was primarily sold in bulk, but Burlotto revolutionized the wine industry in the region by being among the first to bottle his own wines, allowing greater control over quality and branding.

Giovanni Battista was a pioneer in cultivating and promoting Verduno’s unique terroir, particularly the Pelaverga varietal, which the estate still champions today. Following his death in 1927, the winery went through a quieter phase until Fabio Alessandria, a descendant, revitalized its global standing. Under Fabio’s leadership, the winery re-established itself as a leading producer, particularly noted for the Barolo Monvigliero, made using traditional methods like whole-cluster fermentation. The winery today is celebrated for producing elegant wines that harmonize tradition with a clear expression of Verduno’s unique soils and microclimates.

Tasting Notes

A blend of all their holdings in Verduno, except Monvigliero, but mostly from the Breri vineyard next to it. 'Stylistically this is a bit like Monvigliero, if perhaps a little less complex, but perfect to get an impression of what Monvigliero is about.' Jancis Robinson

Press Review

"The G.B. Burlotto 2017 Barolo (showing some of the gold medals and awards won for past vintages in the artwork depicted on the front label) offers a traditional and time-honoured approach to Nebbiolo. It draws its fruit from various sites in Verduno. This is a soft and pliant expression that produces a long and fine succession of wild cherry, blue flower, crushed stone and anise-like aromas. You might also notice some rusty iron or candied apricot. This is a solid Barolo (with 10,000 bottles released) that vaunts a classic and traditional personality despite the hot vintage." Press Review 2

"Just mid ruby and youthful looking. Fine and elegant nose of concentrated cherry laced with spice and notes of iron. Minerally, medicinal hint. Elegant, subtle sour-cherry fruit that is still a little closed. Long, finely ground tannins on the sour-cherry fruit finish. Elegant rather than powerful, but still needs to come further out of its shell. Not a wine you'd expect of a torrid year. Drink 2021-2032."
