17/20 Jancis Robinson

'Bodegas Pinuaga was founded in 1960 and the (certified) organic farm is now run by second- and third-generation Valentin Pinuaga and his daughter Esther, who left her career as a business consultant in Boulder, Colorado to return to Spain and run the family business. She makes the wines alongside Pilar Garcia Granero. 200 Cepas comes from a three-hectare vineyard of 50-year-old, ungrafted bush vines of Cencibel, an old clone of Tempranillo, which has smaller, more concentrated berries and takes longer to ripen, giving a greater depth of flavour and silky tannins. The vineyard lies at 720m. Only released in the best vintages, production is limited to 5,000 bottles. 30% is aged in new French oak for between 14 and 16 months.' It's quite robustly priced for a wine from here!
Deep, glowing crimson. Very satisfying sweet Tempranillo fruit and a seductively creamy texture. Really rich but not excessively sweet. There is lots to dig into here. A wine with a real beginning, middle and end. It probably is just about worth the price! (JR)
