Bonkers Chardonnay, Sugrue South Downs, UK, multi-vintage
A one-off English Chardonnay that critics have compared to grand Chablis and Jura alike. Jancis Robinson calls it 'a new chapter in English winemaking'.
Solera-aged across several vintages in large and small barrels, old and new. Rich, creamy and savoury, with nutty, honeyed complexity balanced by freshness and fine structure.
Drink it with: Roast chicken, lobster, mature Comté or mushroom dishes.
When to drink: Delicious now and will age; Jancis Robinson suggests drinking to 2030.
The producer: Winemaker Dermot Sugrue is behind some of England's most acclaimed sparkling wines; Bonkers is a rare still wine from him.
Sustainability: This wine is vegan-friendly.
