Chateau Kirwan has a name more often seen in the shores of the West of Ireland than in the left bank of Bordeaux. The Kirwans from Galway were one of the Irish families that came to France during the times of the French Revolution and one wine merchant with the surname eventually inherited the chateau in the mid 18th century.

Although the Kirwans sold the chateau in 1802, this heritage makes Chateau Kirwan one of the Wine Geese, a name that serves as a nod to the “Wild Geese”, as Irish soldiers serving in European armies in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries were nicknamed.

In 1925, the Schÿler family added the chateau their already impressive portfolio of wine properties. This 1855 Third Growth is located in prime wine territory, in the heart of the Margaux appellation: the chateau's exceptional soils are rich in ancient gravel, making for a truly remarkable terroir.

Press Review

"The 2019 Kirwan has an understated, cedar and graphite-tinged bouquet, a little Pauillac-like in style, nuanced and gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with taut tannins, focused, tensile and linear with plenty of sapidity towards its oyster shell-tinged finish. Very precise and very sophisticated, this is the best Kirwan in many years - maybe a benchmark for the estate."

Press Review 2

"Blackcurrants with bark, cedar and dried flowers coming through in the nose. Full-bodied with integrated tannins and a long, linear finish. Racy and refined. Sophisticated."
