The Avril family has been making wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the beginning of the 18th century and have long been one of the appellation's reference points for wine. The organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards comprise 35 hectares spread over 24 different plots. Six different grape varieties are used for the red and six for the white. Importantly and very much part of the Avril family's philosophy, only one red and one white are produced. The grapes are de-stemmed 100% and fermentation takes place in cement tanks for the red with ageing in foudres whilst the white is only aged in tank.

Tasting Notes

Lusciously textured with a focus on its tropical fruit, flowers, white peach, yellow citrus peel, almonds, apricot, and orange. On the palate, the wine is fresh, racy, and vibrant with a crispness to the fruits and an oily texture in the sweet finish. Made from close to equal percentages of all 6 allowable, white wine grape varietals.

Press Review

"Crafted from six permitted varieties in equal proportions, co-fermented and cold-settled for one night, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc from Clos des Papes exhales a delicate, complex bouquet of fennel, verbena, pear, iodine, herbs and acacia blossoms. Medium to full-bodied, pure and seamless, it's built around bright acids, a layered, lovely structured texture and a long, ethereal, saline finish. The phenolic aftertaste adds a racy profile that I find particularly appealing. Drink 2026-2046."

Press Review 2

"Bruised apple and a ripeness of fruit on the nose. Lovely grip as well and a honeyed hit on the mid palate – honeycomb and white flowers. A lovely acidity and freshness showing grapefruit, peach and a sense of minerality. A really beautiful example. Fresh and packed full of energy and vibrancy. Drink 2028-2045."
