Opus One, Napa Valley, 2018
A classic Opus One, praised by critics for its elegance and purity, with 99 points from James Suckling.
84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Crème de cassis and blue fruit with lead pencil, candied violets, damp earth and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, with wonderful tannins and a long finish.
Drink it with: Prime rib, lamb rack or aged hard cheeses.
When to drink: Lovely now, but James Suckling suggests it will be even better from 2026. It can benefit from time in a decanter.
The producer: Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Napa vintner Robert Mondavi, combining the traditions of both families.
