Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge 2019, Pessac-Léognan
One of the finest recent vintages from Smith Haut Lafitte, and the first made after the estate gained full organic certification.
59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep, almost black, with cassis, blueberry, black raspberry, smoked earth, tobacco and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, with sweet, concentrated tannins and a long, mineral finish.
Drink it with: Roast lamb, beef Wellington or a fine cheese board. A wine for an occasion.
When to drink: Will evolve for 30 years or more; the drinking window runs to 2055. If you open it young, you may find it benefits from a decant.
The producer: Florence and Daniel Cathiard bought the estate in 1990, and their daughters are now closely involved. It has become one of the most consistently acclaimed estates on the Left Bank for both red and white.
Sustainability: The estate is certified organic, farms its 78 hectares sustainably and runs its own cooperage, making around 70% of its own barrels.
