The organic vineyards of Domaine Karanika are situated at an altitude of 700m in the coldest part of Greece, in the PDO region of Amyndaio. They produce the finest sparkling and still wines in total harmony with nature and with an emphasis on ethical farming. Their aim is to offer straightforward and honest wines that ‘breathe terroir’, are crystal clear, very aromatic and with considerable length. Certified organic since 2009, their biodynamic vineyards include old and ungrafted Xinomavro vines, the younger Assyrtiko and the almost  forgotten Limniona.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in colour, this wine shows a complex nose of sour cherries, plums, dried tomatoes, olives and garrigue. It also shows sweet spiced notes of vanilla, cinnamon and black pepper. This is a full-bodied wine, elegant, with ripe and fine tannins and a fresh acidity and a long length.

Press Review

"Light to mid crimson with a bricky rim. Zesty red fruit and a hint of tomato leaf but not at all green, just fresh. Super-subtle tannins for this variety. Elegant, subtle, long, mouth-watering."

Press Review 2

"Sourced from ungrafted old vines (planted in 1912 and 1960) and aged for approximately 18 months in well used French oak. It comes in at 13.3% alcohol. This is certified organic. Classic, old-school Xinomavro, this has power to spare, mid-palate finesse, big acidity and a long, penetrating finish. The mid-palate is a little slight—a bit more concentration wouldn't hurt—but the purist vision is beautifully executed. This should age well, and it might yet improve."
