Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair’s roots trace back to the early 18th century, when the Liger-Belair family began establishing themselves as notable winemakers in Burgundy. The family’s legacy blossomed over generations, managing both vineyards and négociant activities in the region. By the mid-19th century, they had amassed considerable holdings in some of Burgundy’s finest terroirs. However, in the 1930s, economic challenges and the changing nature of the wine industry led the family to sell off parts of their estate, though they retained some prized vineyard plots.
In 2001, Thibault Liger-Belair, a member of the new generation and a graduate of oenology studies, took up the reins, determined to revive his family’s historic domaine. He reclaimed their family plots and expanded the estate to include prestigious vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Clos de Vougeot, among others. Thibault brought a modern yet traditionally respectful vision to the domaine, converting to organic farming in 2003 and introducing biodynamic practices to ensure the health and sustainability of the vineyards. Under his stewardship, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair has gained renown for wines that combine historical prestige with forward-thinking, environmentally conscious viticulture, embodying both the storied past and the dynamic future of Burgundy winemaking.
