Bruno Clavelier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru La Combe D'Orveaux 2008
Pinot Noir
The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveau, is somewhat of a cult wine among Burgundy fans. This plot overlooks the vineyards of Echezeaux and is below the lower part of Musigny. So a very very choice location. Many people consider this to be the star of the portfolio.
Terroir is obviously fundamental to Bruno and his table is strewn with various rock types that his vines call home. Bruno has a strong portfolio with six premier crus and one grand cru to his name. Most of the vines here were planted in the 1930s and 1940s, a mixture of simple Guyot or (in order to reduce vigor), Cordon de Royat. Bruno has eschewed chemical treatments since the 1980s, longer than many other producers. Though not stated on the label, he practices biodynamic viticulture and the estate is certified (Ecocert). The wines are fermented in tronconic wooden vats that are tailored to each cuvée and he uses up to around 30% whole bunch and a gentle manual pigeage. The wines are aged in a mixture of Allier and Tronçais oak from three or four cooperages, with around 50% new wood for the grand and premier crus. The wines are neither fined not filtered before bottling. Robert Parker
