The Domaine du Comte Armand exploits as a monopoly the Clos des Epeneaux and vineyard plots located on the Volnay and Auxey-Duresses areas. Domaine des Epeneaux owes its name to the Clos des Epeneaux, a magnificent parcel of five hectares acquired by Nicolas Marey at the end of the 18th, beginning of the 19th century.
In 1828, the Clos des Epeneaux and related buildings, known as the Fief de Rancy, situated in the centre of the village of Pommard, became part of the heritage of the family of the Count Armand. The estate remained as such until 1994 when it annexed a vineyard plot situated in the neighboring village of Volnay, then later parcels from the village of Auxey-Duresses.

Today, Domaine des Epeneaux constitutes a total surface area of 9 hectares, and is more committed than ever to producing wines that are true expressions of their terroir. The vineyard is cultivated or ganically (ECOCER T certified) and biodynamically. The grapes are entirely de-stemmed, but left intact, for a five to eight-day cold maceration before the fermentation, which lasts five to ten days, and then the wine remains in the fermenters for between three and fifteen days, depending on the vintage. In most years, the total time with skin contact will be around four weeks, which is longer than most.

The wines will then be aged in barrel for between eighteen and twenty-four months, with new wood limited to 30% for the wine from the old vines of the Clos, down to none at all for the village wines. Paul said from the outset that he wanted to make to make a less tannic wine in the Clos, and one which is more about aromatic length. In this he is continuing the route that Ben was following, but perhaps taking it even further .

Tasting Notes

Exquisite fruit and spice aromas. On the palate, perfect harmony between structure and elegance. rich complex and voluptuous. Its terroir lends great class to this 1er Cru. Very good ageing potential. The Caillerets parcel is one of Volnay`s best 1er Crus. A very ripe yet still nicely fresh nose combines notes of poached plum, dark cherry, spice and a touch of warm earth. There is very good density to the robust and muscular middle weight flavors that offer solid depth and persistence on the lightly rustic finale.

Press Review

"Powerful ripe plum fruit and lots of energy. Quite a bit of acidity and tannin and this is one of the more youthful wines in this Goedhuis selection. Quite demanding at present – much more ambitious than most village Volnays, but I think it has all the ingredients to bedazzle eventually." Drink 2027-2040.
