This boutique winery was founded in 1989 by renowned Burgundian winemaker, Paul Bouchard and South African Pinot Noir pioneer, Peter Finlayson. Situated in the cool climate Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in Walker Bay, 110 kilometres south east of Cape Town, the 22 hectares of vineyard are laid out according to Burgundian principles and more than half are planted with Pinot Noir. Vines are densely planted at 9,000 vines per hectare and green harvesting takes place at veraison (change of colour of grape pigmentation) in order to develop flavour concentration. The vineyards have soils of a distinctive clay-rich Bokkeveld shale (gravel and shale) and the nearby, cold ocean provides a cooling effect on the land. The winery is a leader in responsible agriculture and a pioneer for the World Wide Fund for Nature Conservation. In addition to the acclaimed Pinot Noirs, Bouchard Finlayson also produce highly rated Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs and Rieslings.

Press Review

"The 2020 Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir, a select offering only made in exceptional vintages, originates from the top 10% of the Galpin Peak barrels, typically involving only six to 12 barrels. This edition consists of just six barrels, emphasizing its exclusivity. The medium to full-bodied wine features an oaky essence that rounds out the profile alongside hints of greenness. It retains a soft texture from the oak while showcasing a persistent greenness that drives the finish, reflecting a nuanced balance between wood influence and varietal character."

Press Review 2

"A superb Pinot put together using only the very best barrels of Bouchard Finlayson's flagship wine, Galpin Peak, and only made in exceptional years. A complex selection and marriage of the best new wood, coming from some of the oldest vines on the estate. This is certainly a wine designed to age. The nose can only be described as elegant and seductive. It has a delicate combination of savoury, earthy, animal characters and floral violet and cranberry notes. Spice and zippy acid lend good finesse to this well-balanced wine and cement its ability to age well."
