Château Sociando-Malet first came into existence in 1633 when a Basque nobleman, Sossiondo, started the estate. Over the next 300 years, Sociando changed ownership a number of times, with some owners taking great care of the vineyard and wines, and others who did not. In 1969, Jean Gautreau purchased the dilapidated estate, and succeeded in turning around its fortunes and making it one of the top wines in the Haut-Médoc.

The vineyards of Sociando-Malet are planted to 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc on Günz gravel over clay-limestone soil, which regulates water supply and helps to deliver incredible richness and ripeness to the Merlot. All grapes are fermented with native yeasts in temperature-controlled steel and concrete vats. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in 100% new oak barrels, then a further 6 months in tank before bottling. The wines of Sociando-Malet are some of the most consistent, pleasurable and easy to drink wines in the Haut-Médoc.

Tasting Notes

The 2014 Château Sociando-Mallet offers a classic Haut-Médoc profile, with vibrant aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, layered with earthy notes of tobacco, graphite, and a hint of cedar. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied with firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity that add structure and balance. The fruit flavours are concentrated yet well-integrated, displaying dark berries and a touch of spice, with a subtle minerality that carries into the long, elegant finish.

Press Review

"The 2014 Sociando-Mallet put in a great performance in barrel. Now in bottle, the sophistication is evident on the nose with beautifully defined black fruit tinged with cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin, a silver bead of acidity and superb focus towards the finish. The energy here is superb and it tempts you back immediately for another sip. Probably a Sociano-Mallet that will drink young, yet there is the class to suggest it will age supremely well."

Press Review 2

"The 2014 Sociando-Mallet is medium to deep garnet in colour. Notes of blackcurrant jelly and prunes hop from the glass, giving way to nuances of candied violets, star anise, and mossy tree bark. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly crafted and refreshing, with a firm, grainy backbone and long, earthy finish."
