La Bascula, 'The Charge' Tempranillo/Garnacha/Graciano 2018
La Bascula range Báscula in Spanish means either a weighbridge for lorries or an old fashioned weight scales. When South African Bruce Jack of Flagstone winery and hispanophile Ed Adams MW (both Celtic Tigers at heart) decided on a label design they went for the latter rather than the former to represent balance in their carefully crafted pair of wines from Jumilla, Spain. Good wines are all about balance – balance in the vineyard, the balance between various components in the wine and in the case of Báscula the balance between Old and New World. The Wine The Charge evokes the criss-crossing of Rioja by medieval knights and pilgrims on the Santiago trail.
