Escarpment Pinot Noir 2017
Larry McKenna, commonly known as ‘McPinot’ started Escarpment
in 1998 after cutting his teeth in both Europe and with Martinborough
Vineyards. After many years spent looking for that special site,
Larry and his wife, Sue, found they kept returning to Martinborough
and specifically to Te Muna, 5 kilometres south east of
Martinborough village. There, they established 24 hectares of vineyard
on the terraces of alluvial gravel that overlook the Huangarua River.
The land is farmed organically, with certification due in the next 12 months. The vineyards are densely planted at 6,660 vines per hectare and so their approach includes shoot thinning, leaf plucking and bunch removal so as to create canopies that are less disease prone. The Edge series are fermented and aged in tank whilst the top wines are made in open top wooden fermenters wines with further ageing in French oak barriques, 40-50% of which are new.
