Maisulan is the work of Eva Fernández and Luis Ruiz de Viñaspre. They describe themselves as "two crazy people who are in love with their land" and therefore work it in a very special way. Both Eva Fernández and Luis Ruiz de Viñaspre come from Rioja Alavesa. In Luis' case, you can even tell from the name, because Viñaspre is a neighbouring village to Elvillar, where they also own plots of land. The vineyards are mostly on slopes and the vines are mostly still trained as bush vines. The winemaking couple already turned to organic farming with biodynamic means many years ago.

Tasting Notes

A big, muscular and tannic wine with an enveloping nose of black fruit, incense, lavender, and Mediterranean forest floors. It beautifully incorporates spiciness and minerality. It is serious and structured on the palate, with a herbaceous aftertaste. This is a red wine to enjoy now or keep for a few years! Try pairing it with veal, pasta, suckling pig, and poultry dishes.

Press Review

"The ripe and slightly heady Tempranillo Sobremoro comes from an old vineyard on a slope at 570 meters in altitude on shallow clay and limestone soils that are worked biodynamically. The destemmed grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats, and the wine matured in used barrels of different sizes for one year. The fruit is black rather than red, and there is a sense of ripeness and a touch of warmth. This is darker and earthier in style than the El Hondón, with abundant tannins and a dry finish. 650 bottles produced." 90/100 Wine Advocate
