Twenty years ago when the market for the fortified wines of Maury started to collapse, Jacques Montagne started to buy up the best old parcels of Grenache & Carignan he could find. He now has 50 hectares of vines. The quality found in Clos del Rey stems from the fact that father and son save the best 8 hectares for their own wines, selling the rest to the local co-op. In the cellar they use older oak and minimal intervention. If you need persuading that old vines make great wines then look no further.

Tasting Notes

Very bold. Deep cherry red in the glass with a powerful nose. On the palate, the flavours are layered and complex, with notes of red berries, tobacco and some vanilla. Best to decant this wine before drinking to bring out the superb elegance of the tannin.

Press Review

"A 60-40 blend of Carignan and Grenache, the Cotes du Roussillon Villages Clos del Rey spent 22 months in oak, half of which was new. Huge aromas of cedar and mint are joined by massively extracted dark fruit notes, resulting in a slightly medicinal nose. It's full-bodied on the palate, with rich, velvety tannins and plenty of intensity, plus a long, long finish."
92/100 - Robert Parker
