About This Wine...

PHENOMENA is the name given to the BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RISERVA to commemorate a significant astronomical event which occurred during the year of harvest. The graphics of the label of various years, while keeping the name SESTI and PHENOMENA, change in both image and colour. This label refers to a spectacular planetary encounter. On the 6th of September 2005 after sunset stargazers where able to witness on the western horizon the most beautiful conjunction of the planets venus and juplter, the stah spica (the ear of cohn) together with the sickle of the new moon. The event took place over the constellation Virgo. This excellent Montalcino estate is run by the amazing and slightly eccentric Giuseppe Sesti. Like so many estates in Tuscany they also have extensive olive groves. Giuseppe is not just an inspirational winemaker but he has also dedicated himself to the history of astronomy, having written several books on the subject, encompassing the ancient calendar systems and the story of the Celestial Sphere. He farms organically, but not certified, and biodynamically which he says enables him to produce wines using the lowest amounts of sulphides, hence making the most exquisite of wines. His top wine, named “Phenomena” is a Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, and always commemorates a significant astronomical event which occurred during the year of the harvest.
