About This Wine...
BRUNELLO is made from 100% SANGIOVESE grapes, which come from the estate vines planted from cuttings taken from very old neighbouring vineyards. To fertilise the vineyards and olive groves only vegetable and animal manure are used, and also for the spraying, biodegradable produce are used. After the fermentation the wine is transferred to medium size oak barrels, where it remains for four years before being refined in the bottle for another year, when it is ready to be sold under the denomination DOCG (Denorninazione di origine controllata e garantita) a title which only few wines in Italy can boast. Very evocative of the terroir, a good earthy wine, with more than a hint of dark cherries. Needs a little time to breath but is drinking well now. Great with food. This excellent Montalcino estate is run by the amazing and slightly eccentric Giuseppe Sesti. Like so many estates in Tuscany they also have extensive olive groves. Giuseppe is not just an inspirational winemaker but he has also dedicated himself to the history of astronomy, having written several books on the subject, encompassing the ancient calendar systems and the story of the Celestial Sphere. He farms organically, but not certified, and biodynamically which he says enables him to produce wines using the lowest amounts of sulphides, hence making the most exquisite of wines. His top wine, named “Phenomena” is a Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, and always commemorates a significant astronomical event which occurred during the year of the harvest.
