Domaines Schlumberger, Riesling, Grand Cru, Saering 2017

Light yellow with green reflections. Intense and youthful on the nose, slightly floral aroma followed by dominant fruit of citrus and lemon. Ample, fleshy palate: complex citrus flavours with underlying minerality. Great balance and length.

About This Wine...

“Elegance and balance. This organic Riesling offers a crisp and harmonious combination of white flowers and a stone river-like minerality. Dried lemon and jasmine complete the array of flavours in this Alsatian classic.” Gaby Guedez, February 2017 on the 2017 vintage.

The Estate

A young team led by Séverine Beydon-Schlumberger and Alain Freyburger, the wine maker. The largest vineyard holders in Alsace of which over 50% are Grand Cru status. Their second wines bearing ‘Princes Abbés’ labels, nevertheless contain considerable quantities of fruit from the Grand Cru vineyards. The style is rich and intense. On our visit, we were amazed by the attention to detail from the upkeep of 45km of drystone walls on the steep mountainside vineyards to the complete modernisation of equipment in the winery. The Rieslings are charming and supple; the intense fruit of the Pinot Gris is sensational and lovers of Gewürztraminer will be delighted by these rich, balanced wines.

First mentioned in 1250, the SAERING plot escapes from the hill and extends like a peninsula on the plain, forming a sort of tongue of land in the form of a ring. It has been sold under its own since 1830.

20 ha out of this 27 ha plot belong to our domaine. To the north of Guebwiller, SAERING faces east and south-east, at an altitude of 260 to 300 meters. SAERING’s marl/limestone/sandstone terroir brings out the best in this magnificent, fine, delicate Riesling.
