Saint Patrick’s Day Wine Selection

We may be limited for a range of Irish wines with which to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, (honourable exception goes to Lusca Cab/Merlot). But the next best thing would be to enjoy wine made by an Irishman plying his trade in the vineyards of Spain & France!

This selection contains 6 bottles – 1 white (France) & 5 red (France & Spain):

Atelier des Sources ‘La Lumiére’ Blanc (France)

Atelier des Source ‘Le Retour’ (France)

Atelier des Source ‘La Traversée’ (France)

Oludeo Monastrell (Spain)

Les Deux Cols ‘Trois Terroirs’ (France)

Les Deux Cols ‘Chemins des Fonts’ (France)

In 2009, after many years spent working in France, the U.K and Ireland on the import and distribution side of the wine business, Simon Tyrrell decided to change direction and undertook viticulture and oenology studies at Plumpton College, University of Brighton in the UK, re-emerging in 2011 with a Distinction tucked under his belt. With his long specialisation in the Rhône Valley, Simon was able to spend his harvest experience at Domaine Stéphane Ogier in Côte-Rôtie and Château Terre Forte, near Avignon. In 2012, Simon, along with Charles Derain, a sommelier trained at the prestigious Lycée Hotelier de Tain l’Hermitage in the Rhône and well-known team member of Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud for many years, began producing wine in the Southern Rhône. They were fortunate, through their contacts, in being able to use the vineyards and winery facilities at La Cave des Vignerons d’Estézargues, the progressive co-operative to the west of Avignon. Here they furthered not only their winemaking experience but also their understanding of the emerging areas within the Rhône Valley and so from 2016 began seeking out vineyards to buy in the northern part of the Gard, believing that this hilly region could provide them with the type of fruit they were looking for to produce the sort of wines they wanted to make. At the start of 2017, they were joined in the creation of Domaine les Deux Cols by Gerard Maguire, and together they completed the purchase of their first 3 hectares of vineyard on the northern side of the Cèze River, between the towns of Bagnols-sur-Cèze and Pont Saint Esprit. A further 1.3 hectares were added in 2019 and another 4 hectares at the start of 2020. At the same time, they took over a wine making cellar at the eastern point of the Cèze Valley. In his time away from the vineyard Simon works with the team at Searsons & Tindal Wine Merchants buying, selling and advising.

Now based in Wicklow Town, he has begun a new venture growing grapes & making wine in the up & coming Spanish wine region of Yecla.
