Pegos Claros Reserva 2015, Pelmela

70-year-old Castelão vines

Historical grapevines averaging 70 years old. Grapes are trodden by foot on the first day. The fermentation with stems develops partially in the lagar. Matures in used French oak barrels. Pegos Claros Reserva stands out for its elegance and personality.

“Very moreish sweet, soft, ripe jammy fruits with exotic spices that evolve and improve with every sip. A warming stew of beans, pork and chorizo.”

John Wilson, The Irish Times

About This Wine...

Pegos Claros wines represent the finest winemaking accomplishment in this unique terroir: old Castelão vineyards, with no irrigation, in the sandy soils of Palmela. Grapevines are segmented by age and the oldest ones are one hundred years old, which result in low yields but highly aromatic concentration. The exclusive use of Castelão grapes in almost all our wines gives them a distinctive signature and a high interest, since this enables the development of a coherent and varied portfolio. The wines of Pegos Claros have a remarkable personality, balance and elegance. As they benefit from a minimum storage period in the bottle, our wines are released in the market ready to drink and, at the same time, they maintain an enormous cellaring potential.

“Mid garnet with soft pink rim. Spicy, peppery and vibrant red fruit – still quite fruit forward for a five-year-old wine though there is also a hint of mushrooms to show the bottle maturity, and the oak is still present. At a good point between fruit and tertiary aromas. Chewy and rather thickly textured tannins, smooth but quite dense, with what seems like both fruit and oak sweetness on the palate. As with the aroma, still lots of sweet fruit. Deep, long and chewy, almost fleshy, with the variety’s sweet fruit and the balance of old vines. Nice to see this widely planted variety taken seriously.”

16/20 Jancis Robinson
