About the winery
Bodegas Luis Cañas was founded in 1928, although the family can trace their roots in Rioja soil over two centuries. Originally, wines were transported by Carlos Cañas, Luis Cañas’ father (now 87), in mule-carts across the Sierra Cantabria and the Montes de Vitoria to areas bordering Bilbao and San Sebastián, more than 100 kilometers Villabuena. Today, Luis Cañas have 90 organically managed hectares in the hills of the cooler Rioja Alavesa region, as well as long term contracts with growers covering a further 200 hectares of mixed regime viticulture. Head winemaker Juan Luis is one of the most restless and innovative in the whole of Spain, his wines continue to gain great acclaim and win prestige international awards.
