6 bottles of Luis Cañas, Rioja Gran Reserva, presented in original wooden case
95% Tempranillo & 5% Graciano. Minimum age of vine 50 years. The wine spends a minimum of 24 months in oak cask followed by a further 36 months in bottle before release. Dark black fruits on the nose with elements of thyme & rosemary, with hints of tobacco & leather. Elegance combines with power on the palate, blackberry and black cherry fruits dominate with hints of liquorice and spices. Soft, smooth, rich and intense.
Food pairing and when to drink
Pair with roast meats, leg of lamb, roast beef. Will go well with stews, game or charcuterie. Open, or preferably decant, 1-2 hours before serving. 2010 was an excellent vintage in Rioja, this wine will continue to develop over the next 5-10 years.
About the winery
Bodegas Luis Cañas was founded in 1928, although the family can trace their roots in Rioja soil over two centuries. Originally, wines were transported by Carlos Cañas, Luis Cañas’ father (now 87), in mule-carts across the Sierra Cantabria and the Montes de Vitoria to areas bordering Bilbao and San Sebastián, more than 100 kilometers Villabuena. Today, Luis Cañas have 90 organically managed hectares in the hills of the cooler Rioja Alavesa region, as well as long term contracts with growers covering a further 200 hectares of mixed regime viticulture. Head winemaker Juan Luis is one of the most restless and innovative in the whole of Spain, his wines continue to gain great acclaim and win prestige international awards.
