Fixin ‘La Place’ 2018, Domaine Gérard Seguin

Pinot Noir

Fixin is less known than its famous neighbors on the Côte de Nuits, but it often competes with them. Fixin’s earth is a cocktail of hard limestones for the bouquet, clay-limestone marls for power, and brown earths for subtlety.

The vines aged around 30 years are located in the hamlet of Fixey attached to Fixin; this plot, at a place called La Place is located on the road of the Grands Crus, just north of Gevrey Chambertin in fact.
With a beautiful dark red color, this wine is round and mellow on the palate with a beautiful structure; the texture remains very delicate.. The wine making is traditional as for all the other crus of the domain with ageing in new wooden barrels from the Nièvre region.

About This Wine...

This estate dates back to the 1800’s, it was Alexis Seguin who was one of the pioneers of grafting American rootstocks following the Phylloxera crisis of the 1880’s. Gerard now manages the estate with his son Jerome, they have gradually been adding new parcels of vines over the years and have built up an estate of 6.25 hectares primarily in Gevrey-Chambertin. Despite being a Domaine steeped in tradition, the cuverie and cellars were renovated and updated as recently as 2014.

The vineyards are run sustainably with most of the cellar work, especially the bottling, performed in conjunction with the Biodynamic calendar.

This Fixin is from a lesser known but interesting appellation just north of Gevrey offering good value and early appeal.
