Clos Del Rey 2008 Maury Languedoc Roussillon

45.00

60/40 Carignan & Grenache..

Twenty years ago when the market for the fortified wines of Maury started to collapse, Jacques Montagne started to buy up the best old parcels of Grenache & Carignan he could find. He now has 50ha of vines. The quality found in Clos del Rey stems from the fact that father and son save the best 8ha of for their own wines, selling the rest to the local coop. In the cellar they use older oak and minimal intervention. If you need persuading that old vines make great wines then look no further.

“These superb efforts are made by Jacques and son Julien Montagne from their Roussillon-based estate. They make heavy use of Carignan, with superb results.” Robert Parker

About This Wine...

The top wine from the estate and made from extremely small yields. Hard to believe this wine is from 2008 – tastes so fresh!

“As usual for this cuvee – is around three-quarters Carignan (the balance Grenache) and matured 60% in tank; the rest in new barriques. Rosemary, lavender, and otherwise resinous garrigue herbs ally themselves with ripe blackberry, peat, and saliva-inducing mineral salts on a dense, oily-textured palate underlain with fine, firm tannins, leading to a genuinely exhilarating finish, with sappy, mouthwatering, positively vibratory length that involves tactile and active impingement of stony and somehow almost crystalline mineral character.”

92-93/100 Robert Parker 2011

“Oaky and tannic, with rich, ripe, round and powerful fruit flavors.”

The New York Times
