About This Wine...
“A lighter style of dessert wine so suitable with cheese or light fruit desserts — honeyed and soft with sweet lemon and baked apple aromas, crisp and fresh with good acidity.” The Irish Examiner, July 2019
Beautiful, refined sweet wine to finish off any feast. Flavours of apples, pears and sour quince. A mineral backbone with a long, fresh finish.
Serve as an apéritif, with fresh fruits and melon, blue cheese, foie gras and pâtés, or with light desserts.
Coteaux du Lyon vineyards are situated on hillsides rolling along the Layon, a small stream joining the Loire near Angers. The region has a micro climate; mild with a long autumn ripening season. This gives very ripe Chenin Blanc grapes which are often affect by noble rot and so producing sweet wines of complexity, intensity, great balancing acidity and remarkable longevity.
100% Chenin Blanc
Domaine des Baumard is based in the small town of Rochefort sur Loire, in the Anjou region of the Loire Valley. Most of the domaine’s production is from the Chenin Blanc grape, from which sparkling, dry, semi-dry and sweet wines are all produced. The Baumards, produce in the following white appellations: Anjou , Savennieres, Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume. The uneven ripening of the Chenin Blanc grape enables them to harvest at different times thus producing different styles.
This means of course that all harvesting is done by hand. Florent Baumard, who is in charge of the domaine, is without doubt one of the brightest stars of the whole of the Loire Valley . His approach to winemaking is that of a pragmatist who doesn’t ignore the past but also looks to the future. One thing he doesn’t believe in is the use of barrels for his Chenin Blanc. His wines therefore are always crisp and age beautifully whilst showing the full expression of Chenin fruit and the strong mineral core that is found in this part of the Loire.
Florent now bottles all his wines under screwcap.
